TTO's longest continuing program is True Colors: Out Youth Theater, started in 1994 and now the nation's oldest LGBT youth theater group. True Colors is a year-round program with four main components:
1. The Touring Troupe trains a team of 17 youth ages 14-22 create a show based on their lives and tour it to schools and community groups.
2. The Training Studio offers a full range of LGBT youth theater community workshops.
3. The Creative Action Crew is an ensemble of experienced youth artists who bring True Colors workshops and performances deeper into the community 12 months per year.
4. The Leadership and Inclusion Council is an elected youth group that guides TTO's youth programming and trains youth to join Boards of Directors.
True Colors was recently named a 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award (NAHYP) Finalist by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and its partner agencies, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In recognition of its commitment to strong youth development, True Colors was designated an Innovator of the Year in Youth Development through the Arts by the Social Innovation Forum (SIF). TTO also operates out of its office the North American Pride Youth Theater Alliance, a network of 23 LGBT youth theater groups.
