El Quini de Jerez was born into a Gypsy family known as "Los Pastillas" in Jerez's Plazuela Barrio. He was only 12 when he started working with dancer Manuela Carpio and 15 when he joined El Pipa's company. Later he went on to work with Maria del Mar Moreno as a palmero and for several years he was on call as a palmero for many artists, including Fernando Terremoto and Tomasa Guerrero "La Macanita".  In his early twenties he decided to focus mainly on singing and he began working in tablaos, flamenco peñas and at festivals, singing for dancers such as El Pipa and Juana Amaya.
