Dorothy is not only the name of a Jenny Dragon song. Dorothy is Sarah's grandma. And at Dorothy's house in northern Wisconsin, Summer 2012, it was discovered that the two front ladies of the folk-pop group, Jenny Dragon, were actually long lost cousins (twice removed).
After two years of musical collaboration, and nearly 15 years of friendship, Sarah Jane Goldstein and Jodi Jean Amble saw that once upon a time, Sarah's Judy had married Jodi's Chuck. But Sarah and Jodi did not know they were family when Jenny Dragon went to Hi-Style Studio last April to record "A Fair Souvenir."
With live instrumental takes and minimal overdubs, engineer Alex Hall (JD McPherson, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound, The Del Moroccos) recorded the bands' debut album through the studio's
collection of mid-century recording gear before mixing and mastering for modern ears.
It is appropriate that the songs on "A Fair Souvenir" seem as timeless as the studio's classic equipment. Yet while Jenny Dragon fosters a vintage flavor, their music manages to avoid anachronism, and is as fresh, alive, and exciting as the best of their contemporary influences. Common responses to a Jenny Dragon show attest to the intangible quality of their sound, with audiences often feeling they've stepped back decades, while still not being able to compare Jenny Dragon to anything they've heard before.
Tom Schraeder (of Tom Schraeder & His Ego)
Tom Schraeder is not a singer/songwriter. In fact, that's the last thing he'd prefer you to think of him as. Tom Schraeder is a prolific artist pushed by his own urgent sense to constantly express and create without the need to explain. Why shouldn't he have to explain? Because his tireless musical approach is always held together on a cohesive level by the songs themselves. They could be strummed, electronic, ambient or maybe even hip hop. The genre is not the necessity, but instead to create genuine music without pretense. This is Tom Schraeder. The artist.
For the past few years he's organized the longest running event at SXSW, "AM to AM," presenting a sixteen-hour marathon of music. He is set to release an album with his full band, Tom Schraeder and His Ego, this fall. He's also worked with the Brooklyn-based electronic outfit Pretty Good Dance Moves in Austin to release the album "Egoiste," where he uses his machete of curiosity to hack convention and expectation to pieces. If that weren't enough, among the traveling, recording, heart, and law-breaking, Schraeder has collaborated with respected Chicago hip-hop group Natureal on a project exploring the history and current state of segregation in their city.
Add to that the fact that Tom is currently organizing yet another 10 days of the free arts and culture festival, Chicago, I love you, and you will start to understand why Tom is one of the busiest people on the Chicago music scene today.
So if you hear that whistle blowing, Tom Schraeder will be wailing by.
We/Or/Me is the musical alias of Bahhaj Taherzadeh, an Irish-born, Chicago-based songwriter. Sometimes other people are involved, sometimes they're not. Bahhaj has been writing songs for many years. He first started performing them in front of people around 2002 under the somewhat forceful encouragement of Glen Hansard of the frames/swell season. Since then he has shared the stage with many fine warriors of the road, and has watched as his songs have gone on to live more adventurous lives than he has, appearing on TV and radio and whoring themselves around on the internet. The first We/Or/Me release was a 2003 CD-R EP called Simple Lines, which very few people have copies of. It is so rare, in fact, that not even Bahhaj has a copy anymore. In 2006 We/Or/Me were featured on the excellent Yeti 4 compilation, and in 2008 the Ghostwriter EP was released. In 2009 We/Or/Me started recording a covers record called Dust Jacket, Vol. 1, which was available at Yer Bird Records for a limited time. June 2011 saw the release of the first full-length We/Or/Me record, Sleeping City.
Nineteen year old Jeanne Walker is an indie pop singer/songwriter originally from southern Minnesota. She is currently in her sophomore year of studying vocal performance at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois. Jeanne is the youngest daughter (alongside her twin sister) of a local Minnesotan-based folk musician from the 1970s named Nancy Hanlon. Her musical journey began at the age of fourteen when she began to teach herself how to play the guitar and piano and also found a deep passion for writing. She would upload videos of her work on YouTube, put on shows for her mother in the living room, and play small gigs at local cafes & coffee shops in her hometown of Stewartville, Minnesota. Overtime she began to spark the interest of larger, more well-known recording artists and booking managers for venues around the surrounding city of Rochester, Minnesota. Jeanne marked her territory at Rochester's Thursdays on First & 3rd summer market and music festival by becoming one of the most well-known buskers in the area. She landed a gig on Peace Plaza Stage and a feature in the Rochester Star Newspaper. She has performed on live TV two years in a row as a performer at the Rochester Cancer Telethon as well as Manifest Urban Arts Festival held in Chicago. Jeanne has shared the stage with artists/bands such as The Howlin' Brothers, Jamie Lono, The Pipe Dreams, and Deer Emerson. Having been surrounded by mostly folk and rock music as a child, these genres heavily influence her writing style. Although the majority of Jeanne's music is classified as "indie pop" it can be difficult to match a specific genre to her music as it often has been categorized as pop, electronic, acoustic, and indie/rock. Jeanne enjoys the idea of exploring and incorporating more than one genre into her music. Just as her thoughts and her feelings change, her music also may change. In January of 2013 Jeanne met and signed a recording contract with BGM Records to begin working on her first acoustic EP titled "Fade". Jeanne's music is currently available for download on SoundCloud.com as well as her YouTube channel which features live recordings of both original songs and covers. She is currently finishing up the EP which will be available for download on SoundCloud within the month.
