A beautiful and poignant collaboration between Seattle musicians and theatre artists, The Spell of Love combines the writing of Pulitzer Prize winner Sam Shepard with haunting original music by local singer/songwriters Justin S Davis & Andrea Peterman, then places the dreamlike result in the enchanting world of the Smith Tower.
The piece takes its title from an introduction to Shepard's text written by his collaborator, actor Joseph Chaiken, and reflects the fact that the production is more than just a staging of that series of monologues, incorporating an equal measure of new music.
While couples come together and drift or ricochet apart, we can hear the hearts of two people, singing of their hopes and fears. Will they come together under a spell of love that starts with a wish, simply felt, simply stated?
Those interested in learning more about how the project developed can attend a preview called "Casting The Spell of Love" at the Jewelbox Theatre on Sunday, October 20. An Arts Crush Featured Event, this behind the scenes presentation will include excerpts from the play and a discussion with actors, musicians and director, along with information from Smith Tower representatives about the history of the Seattle landmark and information on its upcoming Centennial in 2014.
