Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Conference
The 20th annual Santa Clara County Domestic Violence Conference takes us from theory to practice as we explore innovative models for early intervention and prevention of violence with children and youth.

The conference will feature best practices and emerging programs that tackle the complexities of domestic violence among those most vulnerable - our children and youth.  Nationally recognized experts will be featured in keynote presentations.

Dr. Jeffrey Edelson, Dean of UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare, will speak in the morning keynote on expanding the range of early intervention strategies.  Dean Edelson's review of the growth of community coordinated domestic violence responses over the past two decades will point to major gaps in response to both survivors and perpetrators of violence, and the resulting effects those gaps have had on children.  He will suggest several avenues for enhancing our current responses as a community, drawing on his recent work focused on surveying global violence prevention programs as well as efforts to engage informal networks in early intervention and violence prevention.  These new efforts extend current social service and criminal justice programs, with corresponding benefits to children's health and wellbeing.

Dr. Andra Tharp of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will speak in the afternoon plenary on preventing partner violence through early intervention.  Recent efforts to prevent dating violence and subsequent partner violence have focused on youth in middle and high school.  Using a public health framework for prevention, Dr. Tharp will provide the rationale for intervening during adolescence, including an overview of the current evidence-base about what works to prevent dating violence and partner violence, and best practices in prevention.

Our goal is to provide attendees with exposure to new interventions and strategies, including those currently underway at demonstration sites nationally or locally in the Bay Area.  Workshops throughout the day will be aimed at working with children and youth, delving into issues particularly relevant to teen dating violence and screening children.  Workshop sessions will speak to educators, social workers, juvenile justice and child welfare processionals, victim advocates, attorneys, healthcare providers and court personnel.
