A Few Degrees of Clara Schumann
This program features music by Clara Schumann and other influential composers in her circle: Raff, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

RAFF - Sonata for violin and piano, op. 128
MENDELSSOHN - Song Without Words
C. SCHUMANN - Piano Trio in G minor, op. 17
BRAHMS - Piano Trio in C minor, op. 101

Pianist Todd Crow and cellist Sophie Shao join artistic director Stephanie Chase.

Noted Brahms scholar Styra Avins will give a pre-concert talk at 7:30, which is included in concert admission.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM

"CLASSICAL ACT OF THE DECADE. Stephanie Chase delivers, with the Louisville Orchestra, a sensational account of Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto. The Elgar is among a handful of the most demanding works in the standard concerto repertoire, and Chase's account takes a challenge and turns it into a privilege." (Louisville Courier-Times)

"Cellist Sophie Shao's...technique is excellent, her tone beautiful and expressive; she projects seriousness and simplicity. Beethoven's Variations of a Mozart Theme were leisurely and charming; Bartok's First Rhapsody, originally for violin, had fire and flair, Schubert's 'Arpeggione' Sonata and Brahms' E-Minor Sonata, Op. 38, were deeply felt and warmly romantic."  (Strings Magazine)

"Todd Crow gave the most heroic performance of all in a later recital, 'The Pianist as Orchestra,' wrestling Liszt's transcription of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique to the mat. Including sectional repeats that orchestras often skip, Mr. Crow showed endless flair, color and stamina." (New York Times)
