Meir Shalev: A PIGEON AND A BOY
Award-winning Israeli writer Meir Shalev's sixth novel, A PIGEON AND A BOY, tells two parallel love stories--one present and one past. Yair Mendelsohn, the contemporary protagonist, is tired of his job as an Israeli tour guide and of his unsatisfying marriage. When his mother adivsed him to go off and find the only two things a person really needs--a story and a place of one's own--Yair begins a quest for home that leads to the tale of a young pigeon handler's extraordinary gift in 1948 and the discovery of a lost love. At the novel's end Yair has discovered what he needs: "I built and was built, I loved and was loved, my soul grew a new skin, a roof, a floor, a wall." The combination of beguiling language and absorbing storytellng, evoking both the very particular Israeli experience and universal themes, makes this novel "a true literary feast" (Ha'aretz). A PIGEON AND A BOY received the Brenner prize, Israel's highest literary recognition. Evan Fallenberg's (see Nov.9) translation won the 2007 National Jewish Book Award for fiction.
