Ariel Sabar: MY FATHER'S PARADISE: A SON'S SEARCH FOR HIS JEWISH PAST IN KURDISH IRAQ
Ariel Sabar's father, Yona, was born in a mud hut in the town of Jakho where Jews, Christians, and Muslims had lived peacefully for nearly 3000 years. With the mass exodus of 120,000 Iraqi Jews following Israel's War of Independence, their ancient culture and language rapidly vanished. Yona eventually emigrated to the United States where he became a professor of Near Eastern Languages at UCLA, world-renowned expert on Aramaic and keeper of the ancient heritage. But Sabar, proudly American, rejected this heritage--until the birth of his own son led him to recapture his family's story.
