What in the World is Going On? -- John Colangelo
Lately it seems that we read and hear a lot about civil unrest in the world Egypt, Indonesia, Brazil, France, Syria, Russia, Spain, Turkey, etc. but the more we hear about them, the less we understand.
What is behind the riots? Is there a common thread among them that would indicate more than just isolated incidents but perhaps a trend ,a movement?
In this course we are going to discuss some of the situations in the world that we've been hearing and reading about and we're going to explore the root causes of the discontent. We'll touch briefly on some of the larger issues in international relations today as well because they provide context the energy markets, big power relations, and especially the rise of China as a major player in world affairs.
The class is intended as a forum for discussion among the participants, with the instructor acting as moderator. A strong interest in current world affairs and a willingness to engage with others in an exchange of opinions are essential for getting the most out of the class. If lively discussion about complex topics in world affairs is to your liking, plan on taking this class in the fall!
