Forgotten Chicago Bloomingdale Trail Walking Tour
On Sunday, September 15, Forgotten Chicago will conduct an exclusive tour of the former Bloomingdale Line, before its pending conversion to a new urban, elevated park. Once known as the Bloomingdale Trail, it has been renamed The 606. FC contributor Terry Banich wrote what remains one of our most popular features, The Bloomingdale Line, and Terry will lead the tour and point out industrial remnants, former factories, and the upcoming changes that will create The 606.
Terry will discuss the complex, controversial and sometimes violent history of the original Bloomingdale Line, initially an at-grade rail line along Bloomingdale Avenue, and later the elevated structure that remains today. Besides the rail structure itself and industrial remnants, there are other curiosities along the Bloomingdale Line which will be explored in-depth.
Although we won't be on the former rail line itself (trespassing is not allowed), Terry will show some of the Line's extant remnants from the street, as well as the locations of some of the new park's access points. Of course, we will also talk about the history of the former factories, neighborhoods and buildings nearby, as the Line is part of a historic industrial economy. We'll discuss housing, former taverns, and other remnants of history along the Bloomingdale corridor.
We look forward to sharing some of the remarkable, and mostly overlooked, sites of the Bloomingdale Line before construction begins on the park!
