The Boarding House, from Dubliners by James Joyce
After she is forced to separate from her inebriate husband, Mrs. Mooney opens a boarding house. Her boarders consist mainly of clerks, musicians, and artists. Mrs. M. runs a strict house, but when a relationship develops between Polly, her pretty 19-year-old daughter, and one of the boarders, "Madam" bides her time and waits for the right moment to intercede in the affair. She assumes that Mr. Doran will do the right thing and propose to Polly, especially since scandal could prove detrimental to his successful career. Mr. Doran contemplates his options when Mrs. Mooney summons him one particular Sunday morning.
