No Third Copy/ Liviu's Dream

Bell
Minneapolis, MN

No Third Copy-On the Ukrainian steppe, toward the end of WWII, the German and Romanian troops are retreating in the face of the unstoppable Red Army. As a Romanian military unit awaits disaster at their squalid headquarters, a surprise visit of a high-ranking Wehrmacht officer awakens hope. The German general has difficulty disguising his disdain for the impoverished conditions of the Romanian "allies", but a case of French champagne loosens the atmosphere. The German major, a bon vivant, shares his memories of Paris and tries to impress his hosts. He tells them he is the owner of the most expensive stamp in the world, one of only two in the world, the famous aurochs head from Romania, which he has "aquired" from a Jew in a concentration camp. There is no third copy. The German officer proudly takes out the stamp and shows it around. Suddenly, inexplicably, on it's route around the table, the stamp disappears. Tensions run high, as the Romanian General orders his men to strip naked in order to be searched. One officer refuses…Liviu's Dream-Liviu lives with his parents in a small Romanian town. He sells stolen goods for a living and is having an affair with his best friend's fiancée. His world is small. It consists of the building where he was born and spent his childhood; his former schoolmates, who drift aimlessly, waiting for a better life; the nearby pub; the corrupt policeman whom he has to pay in order to continue his illegal affairs; and his ex-girlfriends, who are now dating other guys from the neighborhood. Liviu's greatest dream is to have money and be able to travel to the seaside. Director's statement: "In this film I wanted to describe a world stuck in a never-ending period of transition, a world that repeats the mistakes made in the past. Liviu, the main character, is a young man who lives with the fear of the past. He despises his father for the wrong decisions he made, decisions that determined his destiny. Inevitably, this fear makes him repeat his father's mistakes."
