FRYE SALON The fall 2013 season at the Frye Art Museum will open with Frye Salon, a re-staging of the Founding Collection as it was installed in the home gallery of Charles and Emma Frye. Over the course of four seasons, Frye Salon will be activated by an ambitions series of episodic exhibitions, performances, screenings, and discursive programs by contemporary artists and scholars.
Episode One JOSHUA KOHL Joshua Kohl, Composer and co-artistic director of Seattle's renowned Degenerate Art Ensemble, premieres new compositions commissioned by the Frye Art Museum. Earlier this year, Kohl visited his father, legendary writer and educator Herbert R. Kohl. The results of this visit are new compositions, some incorporating elements of Herbert Kohl's poetry and writings, which will premiere as a live performance on September 19 and continue in a sound installation, September 21-October 20.
Episode Two MARK MITCHELL: BURIAL Addressing ceremony and tribute, transformation and release, Mark Mitchell: Burial presents ensembles to clothe the dead. Buried in the earth, incinerated, or at the bottom of the sea, these vestments are intended to degrade readily, leaving nothing behind. Each was inspired by, and created for, the nine muse/models who will present the collection in a live performance on September 20. This will be followed by an exhibition of the ensembles, September 21-October 20.
Frye Salon, Joshua Kohl, and Mark Mitchell: Burial are organized by the Frye Art Museum and curated by Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker and Scott Lawrimore. The exhibitions are funded by the Frye Foundation with the generous support of Frye Art Museum members and donors. Seasonal support is provided by 4Culture, Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, and ArtsFund.
Opening celebration catering provided by City Catering.
