A plane ticket might be out of your price range this winter, but MAFB has you covered as we country-and culture-hop, showcasing the vibrant, dive Pat-a-pan, Gustav Holst's gorgeous In the Bleak Midwinter, Derbyshire's I Saw Three Ships, and Christmas in Killarney!
Alfred Reed's Russian Christmas Music entrances listeners with the sounds of Eastern Orthodox chant in his dramatic and moving piece. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's lush Arabesque from the Nutcracker moves us from Eastern Europe into the Middle East where a Hanukkah medley captures the solemnity and majesty of the Jewish holiday.
Sounds from the Americas are represented by the traditional Canadian Huron Carol and a collection of tunes from Puerto Rico and Brazil, performed by our new string orchestra. Stephen Melillo's O Come Holy Night is a modern take on the traditional favorite, complete with electric guitar.
In a nod to consumerism and conformity, a cheeky performance of Malvina Reynolds's Little Boxes brings out the "ticky-tacky" in us all; only to be topped withMele Kalikimaka (The Hawaiian Christmas Song), famously recorded by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters.
