MARY FAGAN TRIO
Mary Fagan is a singer/songwriter who hails from Austin, Texas. Her musical influences range from Duke Ellington to The Grateful Dead. She has traveled the country, soaking up musical interests along the way. So much so that it's hard to fit her into any one musical category. She has a Honky-Tonk band in Texas and an Americana band in North Carolina but her Summers are spent playing music here in The Granite State, where she was raised. In New Hampshire she performs solo, duo and trio and with a local groups The Matt Poirier & Friends and The Magnificent Sanctuary Band. The September Mary Fagan Trio show is her final performance before heading back to Austin for the cooler months.
Joining her on upright bass is Don Williams, session player and member of the faculty at Plymouth State College. Williams plays with numerous jazz groups in the area, including the Concord-based David Tonkin Group.
On drums is Jered Steer. Steer is active in many groups in the region; Brasbe, Donkilo Afro Funk Orchestra, The Matt Poirier Band, and The Magnificent Sanctuary Band, just to name a few.
You can expect to hear an eclectic mix of songs at her shows. Her originals originals run the gamut from folk to funk, blues, jazz and Americana. Backing herself on guitar or piano, she will shift seamlessly from a 1930's jazz tune to a groovy original and then a traditional song. All the while captivating you with jazzy, velvety vocals, tinged with the blues.
Fagan's jazz influences run deep. "My parents had a lot of jazz albums. I remember listening to Sarah Vaughn, I couldn't have been much more than 4 years old and thinking "This woman is just singing anyway she feels". The influences of Vaughn, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald are evident in Fagan's singing style. Her voice holds it's own as a solo instrument, soaring and dipping playfully through a 3 octave range.
"People ask me how I came to develop my scatting technique. Honestly, it came out of necessity. I was playing a lot of 3-4 hour solo gigs, so scatting was a simple way that I could stretch the songs. Musically, not being confined by words is fun. It frees me up. I'm able to do a lot more with my voice."
The September 6th show will feature Fagan's original songs and will include a jazz selection from the 1930's as well.
MATT POIRIER & FRIENDS
Since 2005, Matt has been living and performing out of Concord, NH. Over the years, Matt has regularly performed at small venues, clubs and festivals in and around the central New Hampshire area as a Solo Acoustic Performer and as part of various collaborations ranging from acoustic duets to a full on Americana-Roots Rock Band. Matt has a noticeably unique and original approach towards playing the acoustic guitar, infusing percussive rhythms and grooves with intricate finger-picking styles. While tough to pinpoint a specific genre, the typical Matt Poirier show will smoothly touch base on folk, Americana, bluegrass, rock and groove/funk, while pushing the limits of the acoustic guitar. An honest voice with a slight rasp combined with an adventurous, dynamic and original playing style, makes Matt a true acoustic juggernaut.
Matt also donates time to a variety of charity functions, and is the co-founder of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Benefit Concert which held annually at Fun Intelligent Training in Concord, NH.
The Matt Poirier & Friends Band includes Matt Poirier (guitar & vocals), Mike Martel (guitar), Chris Candito (bass & vocals), Jared Steer (drums) & Mary Fagan (guitar & vocals).
