Shirim collaborated with author/artist Maurice Sendak to create "Pincus & the Pig," a Jewish version of Prokofiev's Peter & the Wolf. Mr. Sendak re-wrote the narration, drawing on his family memories, and Shirim re-wrote the music in a klezmer style. The piece has sophistication and humor on many levels, and will entertain all members of your family!
Narrated by David M. Lutken (2013 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor, Non-Resident Production, for Woody Sez: The Life & Music of Woody Guthrie at Theater J).
Shirim Klezmer Orchestra will also perform "Klezmer Nutcracker Holiday Concert" on Saturday evening, November 23.
Parents Choice Award "Prokofiev's iconic "Peter and the Wolf," undergoes a sublime comic transformation in the hands of master storyteller Maurice Sendak and the notable Shirim Klezmer Orchestra. Here, it isn't a big bad wolf on the rampage. It's a monstrous wild pig, or "Chozzer." With clarinet, trombone, banjo, mandolin, piano, accordian, tuba and drums, the klezmer artists give a distinctive voice to each character-Chozzer, Boychik Pincus (Peter), Duck, Birdie, Cat, Zeyde (grandfather) and bumbling, gun-toting cossacks-while lively narrator Sendak provides hilarity with his Yiddish-flavored re-telling of the classic."
