Who is Hamlet? -- George Frisch
LLCC brings you another great course by George Frisch, who can make Shakespeare come alive for you like no one else can.
Imagine while you are away at college, you learn that your father, the King, has died. You return to your home, the royal castle, expecting to assume your duties as king, only to find that your country is preparing for war; that your uncle has engineered his own election as king; and that your uncle and mother are about to marry. Your uncle refuses to let you leave the country to return to your studies, and you realize he perceives you as a threat to his crown.
Against all tenets of the rational philosophy you have been studying, you are confronted by a supernatural phenomenon that claims to be the ghost of your dead father; that tells you he was murdered by your uncle; and who swears you to revenge. You don't believe in ghosts. What should you do? What can you do? Who are you?
In this two hour class, we will explore Shakespeare's quintessential tragic hero, Hamlet, through what is said about him by other characters in the play; what he says about himself; and how, or even whether, he resolves the dilemma he has found himself in. We will also take a couple of brief historical detours to look at interesting references in the play as an Elizabethan audience might have understood them.
George Frisch is a retired securities lawyer and former associate professor of law with a lifelong interest in Shakespeare. He has taught one previous LLCC class: Shakespeare and the Law.
