FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When are tours offered?

History tours runs most weekday mornings from mid-June to August. Boarding is at 9:45 a.m., the vessel leaves dock at 10:00 a.m. and returns at 12 noon.

What ships offer the tours?

The 129 passenger Islander is used Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The 216 passenger Princess Wenonah is used on Wednesdays only.

What do we see and hear on the tour?

Our live narrator gives an informative and entertaining presentation on the tour, pointing out historical sights and natural points of interests. Keep an eye out for eagles and other wildlife that make their homes along the river. Bay City is an international port, so we often pass lake freighters and smaller boat traffic along the Saginaw River. On the North route, we travel from downtown Bay City to the mouth of the Saginaw River or just beyond (weather and time permitting). On the South route, we travel in the vicinity of James Clements Airport and Zilwaukee before we turn back for the return trip.

Are the ships barrier-free?

No. While we can put guests in wheelchairs onboard if they wish to take the tour, the vessels are not barrier-free and do not offer restroom access on the boarding deck. We recommend wheelchair users join us aboard the Princess Wenonah on Wednesday mornings for easiest boarding. For more information contact Michelle at (989) 893-0251.

Can we bring snacks onboard?

Sorry, due to our Health Department licensing and Homeland Security precautions, no food or fluids may be brought aboard. We do offer beverages and snacks for purchase onboard for at reasonable prices. Snack bar sales help keep the tours free!

Where do I park?

Free on-site parking is provided for passengers, see Dock Location in the left-hand menu for directions. Please remove your vehicle from our lot after the cruise, as the parking area will be locked within one half hour after the tour. No overnight parking is permitted.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome, however we request that one adult be present for every three children, and that they be well-supervised onboard. Do not allow children to move about the vessel unaccompanied, or to climb on rails or run onboard.

Can I bring my pet?

Please make arrangements for pet care while you cruise with us, as pets are not permitted onboard.

Is smoking allowed?

No. Since we are a licensed premise serving food and beverage, there is no smoking permitted aboard the Princess Wenonah or Islander as of May 1, 2010 per State of Michigan Law. Smoking materials may not be brought aboard.

Why is there a limit on the number of tickets I can reserve?

Bay City Boat Lines is a privately-held family company primarily offering paid public events and private charters. We partner with other local companies to provide this special series of Free History Tours to visitors and local residents who may otherwise not be able to take a tour with us. Limiting tickets to individuals and families allows to serve our community in a meaningful way. Allowing blocks of tickets to be reserved by groups would quickly deplete our ticket inventory, and make if difficult for families and individuals to have access to the tours.

Please reserve tickets for your household only. We allow you to reserve up to 6 tickets, but ask that your reserve only what you need, and know you will use. If you need more tickets, you can always invite additional guests to arrive at the dock before the tour, and we will allow standby passengers to board until the ship is full. We can accommodate a few extra passengers most of the time.

What happens if it rains?

All tours depart rain or shine! Keep in mind weather and temperature can change quickly in our area. Please dress accordingly!

What else do I need to know?

Expect to pass through a security screening as you board. Leave food, beverage, fluids, tobacco, weapons and any unnecessary items in your vehicle. Our vessels and our dock are a secure facility regulated by Homeland Security. We may ask for identification in some cases, and are required to inspect all person and parcels entering the vessel, including purses, coats and bags. Please travel light, but do bring your camera or binoculars for pictures and sightseeing.
