(1969) dir Sydney Pollack w/Lancaster, Patrick O'Neal, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Peter Falk, Astrid Heeren, Scott Wilson, Tony Bill, Al Freeman Jr., Bruce Dern [105 min; 35mm]
This extraordinarily entertaining, oddball film stars Lancaster as the leader of a ragtag group of soldiers during WWII who hole up in a 10th century Belgian castle. Once there the owner of the castle tries to get them to protect his art collection, the commander has an affair with the countess, one soldier decides to become a baker, and another falls in love with a Volkswagen all the while the unseen Nazi forces are advancing.
