Birdwatching At Oso Flaco Lake - With Tom and Otis
Avid birdwatchers Tom and Otis Slater want you to join one of their typical bird watching adventures on a weekend morning.

Just north of Guadalupe, California, lies one of the most scenic natural areas all along California's coast, Oso Flaco Lake.

The natural area provides a unique trail experience through the dune complex, where visitors walk over a mile-long footbridge and planked boardwalk through riparian areas of willows and wax myrtle, over a freshwater lake, and through dune scrub habitat ending at the beach.

When Tom Slater and his son, 4th grader Otis, looked for something they would enjoy doing together outdoors, they found a passion for birdwatching.  They have since identified numerous birds and studied their habitats.  Now they've invited us to join them.

Oso Flaco Lake Trail is an easy 2.2 miles round-trip walk.  During our walk, we'll locate and discuss different species of birds in the variety of habitats.  More than 200 birds live in, or migrate through, the preserve throughout the year. We may see resident marsh birds on the lake edge, the federally endangered California least tern, the California brown pelican, the black-shouldered kite and other waterfowl.  The birds we encounter will depend upon the date and time of day.

You are encouraged to bring binoculars to help you identify birds by sight.  But we'll also learn how to locate and identify some of the local birds by sound.

Tom Slater is an English teacher at Mesa Middle School and an avid birder. He and his son, Otis, have seen and identified over 250 species along the Central Coast.

How to Get There: At the intersection of Hwy 101 and Oso Flaco Lake Road (3.7 miles north of Guadalupe), turn west on Oso Flaco Lake Road and travel 3.1 miles to the parking lot.  There is a $5-per-car parking fee.

No pets are allowed.  Poison oak and stinging nettles are common in this area.
