Whispering Solo Piano Concert - Sedona, AZ
On Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 7:00 pm, Steinway of Phoenix will host a holiday theme solo piano concert featuring Windham Hill artist Liz Story and two Whisperings artists, Lisa Downing and Joseph Akins. These artists will perform their original solo piano music as heard around the world.
Liz Story began her musical training as a young child, mastering Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 11 by the age of 11. She continued her piano studies at the Juilliard School of Music and enrolled at Hunter College, but after hearing the jazz pianist Bill Evans one night at the Bottom Line in New York City, she decided to learn jazz piano and became a student of Sanford Gold, whom Evans recommended. Later, after moving to Southern California, she studied at the Dick Grove Music Workshops in Studio City. During her studies, she took a job playing piano in a restaurant and was thrust suddenly into improvisations when the piano had no music stand. Over several months these improvisations developed into compositions. When Windham Hill's Will Ackerman heard a tape of these, he signed her to record her debut album, Solid Colors. Liz Story recently signed with DMI after recording a number of best-selling, critically acclaimed albums for Windham Hill and RCA Records. Those releases highlighted her classical piano background, fused with a wide range of styles embracing jazz, folk, pop and impressionistic music. www.lizstory.com
Lisa Downing has lived in the Denver, Colorado area all of her life and has been actively composing and performing solo piano in the Denver area since 1982. She has a passion for writing and performing original music for solo piano. Her premier album is entitled Think On These Things, released in 1991. This collection of original solo piano compositions might be classified as "Neo Classical" or "New Age". Melodic, reflective and contemplative pieces will generate peaceful visualizations that are perfect for quieting your world and centering your soul. Dr. Joseph Akins is a pianist, keyboardist, composer, producer and professor based near Nashville, Tennessee. Joseph has studied with some of the worlds greatest jazz educators and has performed with several notable county, rock and jazz groups. During the 90s, he turned to composing and performing contemporary solo piano music after facing a live challenge that was threatening to his music career. He released his debut piano CD Keys to the Heart in 1997 and a follow-up in 2007 titled, Masterpeace. These albums receive ongoing airplay and reviews worldwide and he continually travels the United States to perform the original music from these albums.
