The Murphy Beds, with Edel Fox and Neill Byrne
What a night this promises to be! Seriously. Jefferson Hamer and Eamonn O'Leary have been singing together for quite a number of year. Very hard to get to voices to blend together as seamlessly as these guys do! And the guitar bouzouki mandolin combinations and accompaniments! Well, par excellence harkening back to the Paul Brady/Andy Irvine hey days. The Murphy Beds is what they call themselves now and they played for us at A St. Patrick's Day Celtic Sojourn in Sanders Theatre and New Bedford two years ago. Really well received and this is their first return to the area since then.
Co. Clare is known for its great concertina players and now for a whole new generation of great traditional musicians. Edel Fox is perhaps one of its finest presently. Taking this old tradition, preserving its soul but giving the tunes new lift and rise, her brand new CD with fiddler Niall Byrne is just perfect in every way. Put fiddle and concertina together in this style and you have the best in what is called "pure-drop" music.
Hey, add these four players together? Bet it will happen for a few tunes. At the Backroom of the Burren, great musical moments are created regularly. Hope to see you there.
The Burren Backroom series launched in October of 2011 but has already created many memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy and Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts. DeDanann, Dervish, Teada, The Teetotalers, Lunasa, Robbie O'Connell, Sean Tyrrell, the list is building and building, and the radio recordings have become a feature of the weekly Celtic Sojourn radio broadcasts. A series of CDs "Live from the Backroom" is being planned.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. Regularly, there are "openers" artists presenting three or four pieces often in contrast to the "main" offering. This has seen some spectacular new and often unexpected talent being presented on stage.
Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
