Dir: Joel Zito Araujo. A documentary film about the taboos, stereotypes, and struggles of Black actors in Brazilian television "soaps." Based on his own memories and on a sturdy body of research evidence, the director analyzes race relations in Brazilian soap operas, calling attention to their likely influence on Black people's identity-forming processes. 90 minutes. Post-show panel discussion on Afro- Brazilian life with the filmmaker, Joel Zito Araujo, anthropologist Dr. Angela Gilliam (Evergreen State University), anthropologist Mark Wells (University of Michigan), and Antonio and Graca Ribeiro , originally of Bahia, Brazil.
Note: Director Araujo will be present at the Festival, presenting this and the narrative feature film DAUGHTER OF THE WIND, which screens tonight at 7:00 p.m. Afternoon Brazilian dinner (available for additional cost)provided by Tempero Du Brazil, courtesy of Antonia and Graca Ribeiro.
