Benefit for Patricia Rainey (PJ)
| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, June 26, 2013
PHILADELPHIA, PA - June 14th, 2013, City Hall Room 202, Khalid Moffitt received The Lucien Blackwell, Guiding Light in the Community Award and was asked to do the closing speech of the ceremony. Khalid Moffitt, Activist, Author and Board Member of the Philadelphia NAACP Branch delivered a speech about the senseless acts of violence in Philadelphia; in particular about Teenager, Patricia Rainey (PJ).
According to news reports, Patricia was walking home from a playground when shots were fired and she was hit with a stray bullet that nearly took her life. The shooting happened in broad daylight at around 4pm Sunday, June 9th, 2013 after an apparent argument between a group of young men.
As a result of the shooting, Patricia Rainey had to have her left eye surgically removed, while her fellow classmates were graduating 8th grade. PJ's parents say their daughter's spirits are high, but she has struggles at times with losing her eye, being terrified to be outside, hearing gunshots and waking up with nightmares.
Patricia's story touched the heart of Khalid Moffitt; five years ago, Mr. Moffitt was shot in the neck from a stray bullet that has left his left vocal cord paralyzed. From that experience Khalid has written his self published poetry book & cd entitled "Passion & Frustration," stopping violence and making changes in society.
After the speech was done and the applause stopped, Khalid was approached by J. Whyatt Mondesire, President of the State and local Philadelphia NAACP Branch; as he said once before to Khalid about the 2012 PHI Stop the Violence Rally in Love Park; "What do you want us to do."
As a result of extensive medical care, the Rainey Family has incurred a large amount of medical expenses. In lieu of those circumstances, Khalid Moffitt with the Philadelphia NAACP Branch, J. Whyatt Mondesire has organized a charity event to assist the Rainey family with those expenses and to send Patricia and her family to an all expensed paid trip to Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.
"Although we are not able to change what happened to PJ, we will not let this tragedy define her life," said Khalid Moffitt.
A tentative date will be Saturday, August 17th, 2013, a day after Patricia's Birthday at the Mt. Airy Church of God In Christ, 6401 Ogontz Ave Philadelphia, PA 19126. Proceeds from the Event will be used for medical supplies and a trip to Walt Disneyworld, Orlando, Florida.
