Forney will present a lecture about her New York Times bestselling graphic memoir about her bipolar disorder, Marbles: Mania, Depression, Michelangelo, and Me, to illuminate the power of narrative, the language of comics, and information about bipolar disorder. My talks involve the use of visuals, generally a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a Q&A.
Using comics in the field of health is a growing phenomenon, including international conferences, medical school classes, and clinical applications. A local example: Seattle & King County Health Department distributed hundreds of thousands of comic books, "No Ordinary Flu", about the 1918 influenza epidemic. Health is physical and rational on one hand, and psychological and emotional on the other, and the language of comics expresses both of those - respectively, in words and in pictures. The design of each page, lettering, and rendering style are vital parts of that language.
