Description
HoCoPoLitSo (Howard County Poetry and Literature Society), in partnership with the Howard County Conservancy, will present a family focused afternoon of poetry and nature with acclaimed poet JOY HARJO reading from her works at 3 PM on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at the Howard County Conservancy. This inter-generational event, centering on nature and the environment through the lens of poetry, will take children on a supervised nature walk with a lesson on haiku (poetry) while adults hear and discuss poetry with Ms. Harjo.  A book sale and reception will follow.

Joy Harjo, an internationally multi-talented artist of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation, has published seven poetry collections, her most recent - How I Became Human, New and Selected Poems; an award-winning childrens book, The Good Luck Cat; and co-edited Reinventing the Enemys Language, Native Womens Writing of North America, an anthology of contemporary Native womens writing in addition to contributing a poetic prose to Secrets from the Center of the World, a book of photographs by Stephen Strom.

Her awards include the 2000 Western Literature Association Distinguished Achievement Award, the 1998 Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Award and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America.

Enlarging the audience for contemporary poetry and literature since 1974, The Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo) produces readings, residencies, and special events for the general public and high school students and since 1986 The Writing Life, a writer-to-writer cable television series.

Notes
Children under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult and a permission form signed to participate in the nature hike.
