Sunday, 14 July, starting at 7:30 pm, Church on the Hill, 140 Bowdoin Street, Beacon Hill (Boston), the SONS OF LIBERTY FESTIVAL presents "BRAVO BERNSTEIN" featuring the Redline Brass Quintet. Members for this concert are Kyle Spraker (Trumpet), Greg Smith (Trumpet), Clark Matthews (Horn), Chris Moore (Trombone) and Phil Hyman (Bass Trombone). With selections from West Side Story, Dance Suite, and solo pieces Leonard Bernstein wrote about his friend's dogs. Yup, you read that right.
Made up of some of the Boston area's most talented and active musicians, the Redline Brass Quintet is quickly growing to be one of the most exciting groups to see on stage. A collection of unique personalities with sensitive musicianship, the Redline Brass met while studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. Inspired to continue rewarding musical experiences together, the group accepted a fellowship in Community Outreach at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There, they trained rigorously with former Empire Brass (and BSO) Trombonist, Norman Bolter and earned an Artist Diploma for their contribution to the Longy community. In recognition of their "skill and artistry in engaging audiences of all ages and contexts", RBQ was awarded the first President's Award for Excellence in Teaching Artistry from the Longy School of Music (of Bard College). Redline Brass is quickly gaining traction as one of Boston's most exciting groups to see live. Between innovative performances in outreach, wowing young audiences with the technical and musical fireworks or blazing a new trail in the classical repertoire, Redline Brass is always pushing the boundaries of the art form.
Later than most, Kyle Spraker began learning the trumpet in high school at the age of 16. His musical interest began with the saxophone, but after being recruited to participate in Drum Corp International he was persuaded to learn a brass instrument. With a strong desire to teach, Kyle was accepted to California State University of Long Beach to earn a degree in Music Education, but was immediately encouraged by his professor (Robert Frear) to focus on trumpet performance. After studying with Los Angeles Philharmonic members, James Wilt and Christopher Still, Kyle switched focus to refining his technique and musicality toward the art of orchestral playing. Kyle went on to pursue a Masters of Music at the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA ('10). There, he studied with Boston Symphony- 2nd Trumpet, Benjamin Wright and regularly performed with the NEC Philharmonia, conducted by Hugh Wolf.
Aside from a busy performance schedule with groups like the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Callithumpian Consort, and Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Kyle also enjoys teaching. In fact, this past summer Kyle traveled to San Juan de Colón, Venezuela to give three weeks of masterclasses, lessons, and a recital for trumpet students participating in an El Sistema music festival. Kyle has also attended several other festivals including the National Orchestra Institute, Idylwild Festival, and the Castleton Festival. Notable conductors Kyle has performed with include: Lorin Maazel, John Williams, Benjamin Zander, Gunther Schuller, Julian Kuerti, Michael Stern, Carlos Kalmar, Andrew Litton, Joshua Weilerstein, and Sean Newhouse. Outside of RBQ, Kyle is the principal trumpet (and a founding member) of the Discovery Ensemble, conducted by Courtney Lewis(Minnesota Orchestra Assist. Conductor). Similar to RBQ, Discovery is a chamber orchestra that strives to "bring classical music to kids" by creating fun and educational programs. Membership includes some of Boston's highest caliber musicians, performing at some of Boston's best chamber venues: Jordan Hall, Sanders Hall, and several live broadcasts from WGBH Live at Frasier with Cathy Fuller. www.discoveryensemble.org
Based in Newmarket, NH, trumpeter Greg Smith maintains an active performance schedule all across New England. From the northwest corner of Vermont to the tip of Cape Cod he can be found performing with orchestras, chamber ensembles, musicals, and period orchestras.
Orchestral appointments include the Vermont, Cape Cod, and Atlantic Symphonies as well as the Boston based chamber orchestra Discovery Ensemble. Greg also served as principal trumpet in the Glens Falls Symphony in northern NY for 8 years and appeared as a featured soloist with the orchestra. Other orchestral highlights include appearances with the New World Symphony, Emmanuel Music, and at the Spoleto Festival USA. Greg has worked with outstanding conductors including James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Rafael Frubreck des Burgos, Fabio Luisi, Gunther Schuller, and John Adams.
Greg Smith has played for musial theater productions at the Maine State Music Theater, Fiddlehead Theater, and the Palace Theater Manchester. In 2011 he played in the American Repertory Theater production of Porgy and Bess that would go on to win a Tony award on Broadway. Greg holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and Bard College. While a student at Bard, he won the college's concerto competition for two consecutive years and appeared as a soloist with the Bard College Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra. He also received fellowships for advanced study at the Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific Music Festival, and the Round Top Festival.
Chris Moore received his master's degree from the New England Conservatory where he studied with the former Second Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Norman Bolter. Currently, he is an active performer in the New England Area. In addition to playing with RBQ, Chris can also be seen performing with the Apollo Quartet, Sound Icon, Discovery Ensemble, Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, New World Symphony, and the Callithumpian Consort. Some of his most influential teachers and mentors have been Norman Bolter, Milt Stevens, and Steven Drury. Chris is recorded on the Air-ev label.
Philip Hyman, bass trombonist, received his master's degree from New England Conservatory, where he studied with Boston Symphony Orchestra bass trombonist, Douglas Yeo. He completed his undergraduate studies at Susquehanna University and, during his tenure there, appeared as a soloist with the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Trombone Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble. Before attending graduate school in Boston, Mr. Hyman was the bass trombonist of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra and Williamsport Chamber Choir and Orchestra for three years. In 2005, he was named the winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop's National Solo Bass Trombone Competition in Washington D.C. and received an honorable mention in the 2004 International Trombone Association bass trombone solo competition. Mr. Hyman attended the Aspen Music Festival and School for two summers. There he studied with John Rojak and Per Brevig and worked with many world-renowned conductors such as Michael Stern, Peter Oundjian, and David Zinman. Currently, Mr. Hyman is an active freelance musician based in the Boston area. He is a founding member of the Redline Brass Quintet and has played with notable ensembles such as The Boston Pops, Boston Lyric Opera, New World Symphony, Boston Ballet, Hartford Symphony and The Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
