Here's a few of the scheduled stops:

Beatnik Gallery
Former home of the Skinner/Howard Gallery in a historic early 20th century brick industrial building, this is one of the best gallery spaces in the city-exposed brick walls, high structure and large continuous clerestory windows.

Orbit Car Wash
Former gas station, this is a mid-century modern, 'Googie' conversion to a car wash and dog wash.

Fox & Goose
Long-time R Street venue, very popular British pub, with great food and beer selection---spatially similar to Beatnik Gallery above, with exposed brick and high trusses.

CADA WAL (Warehouse Artists Loft) Project
A six-story conversion of the historic former CADA warehouse, originally an automobile storage facility with a large elevator that carried cars up and down.  Artist loft studios/residences will feature exposed board-formed concrete and concrete mushroom column caps similar to Frank Lloyd Wright's Johnson Wax building in Racine, WI.  Located 1 block from light rail, to encourage urban living without a car.

1400 Block of R Street
Highly successful conversion of historic buildings into restaurants, night club, and loft housing above.  Buildings were the original home of Continental Baking Company, later becoming Wonder Bread.  Notable restaurant tenants include R-15, Shady Lady, Magpie Café and Burgers & Brew.

Crystal Ice
Former ice storage/production facility spanning two city blocks, these now-vacant concrete and brick structures will eventually house artist studios, restaurants, and housing, directly adjacent to light rail.

Insight Coffee
The brainchild of Lucky Rodriguez, Insight opened a few years back at the former site of Winslow's Graphics in a nondescript building that had been used for storage for many years. Imaginative art and woodwork, big picture windows and a very serious attitude about high quality coffee have quickly established Insight as a neighborhood center. They are very bicycle friendly as well - another endearing feature.

Chase Residence
This former Black & Decker repair shop was converted into a 'loft' residence by its architect and artist owners.  The building will be featured on an upcoming HGTV show called "You Live in What?"

Tapestri Square
Urban infill townhouse project, on site of former industrial building.  Project conveys feeling of East Coast 3-story brownstone residences, with front entry stoops.

Temple/Revolution/Coop
This location has developed strong synergy with Temple Coffee and Revolution Wines, a very popular gathering spot with a great outdoor sitting area.  Soon to join on an adjacent parcel will be the new Natural Foods Coop, which has outgrown its current location after 20+ years.  Together these uses will likely create a new urban 'ground-zero' destination.

Newton Booth
This former public school became an office building use for years, and then sat vacant for more years before recently being converted back to school use, this time as a private school.

DMV Remodel
Once touted as one of Sacramento's ugliest building, the recently completed  "Re-skin" project for the State Headquarters building for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is much more than just a beautification project.   The tour will include a ride-around of the entire site and focus on building's new elevations, each of which was designed in response to interior spaces and solar orientation.  Join us as we tour the exterior of one of Sacramento's newest landmarks.

Old Soul/40 Acres/Guild Theater/Housing
This complex has become a ground-zero location at Broadway and 34th Street for much of Oak Park.
A popular coffee and beer venue, gallery space, restored historic theater, and new housing on the surrounding blocks are certain to become a catalyst for future mixed-use development.

About the Festival:

The central theme around the Central Valley Architecture Festival is an exploration of the identity of our region; the relationship of architecture  and design to our culture, landscape, climate and history.

The festival mission is three-fold:

1. Highlight existing relationships between the region and its architecture.

2. Create an ongoing dialogue to inform a distinct, regional, architectural identity.

3. Facilitate greater transparency with the public in how architects create our built environment and how it impacts their daily lives.

Festival Dates: October 12 to October 28, 2012
