Friday, 12 July, starting at 7:30 pm, Church on the Hill, 140 Bowdoin Street, Beacon Hill (Boston), the SONS OF LIBERTY FESTIVAL presents "BEETHOVEN ROCKS!"
featuring Polish, Scottish, English, Irish, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Tyrolean, German, and Swiss folk songs arranged by Ludwig von Beethoven; excerpts from Beethoven's Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat major, famously called "The Archduke"; and the gorgeous Violin Sonata in A major Op. 162 by Franz Peter Schubert.  Performers are: Elise Groves, soprano; Peter Terry, baritone; James Dargan, violin; Javier Caballero, cello; and Matt Auerbach, piano.

Elise Groves, soprano, is an early music specialist based in Boston. A dedicated and versatile chamber musician, her repertoire ranges from the chant of 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen to new compositions, with a special focus on the late Renaissance and early Baroque. Elise is a chorister and cantor with the Choir of the Church of the Advent and has performed with Seven Times Salt, Meravelha, Exultemus/Newton Baroque, The Broken Consort, Grand Canonical Ensemble, and with many other chamber ensembles in the Boston, MA and Portland, OR areas. A native Oregonian, she received a B.A. and M.A. in Music Education from Oregon State University and an M.M. in Early Music Performance from the Longy School of Music. http://www.elisemgroves.com/

Peter Terry, baritone, received vocal training as a singer from private instructors in New York, at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and at the Oberlin and San Francisco Conservatories of Music in the 1970s and 1980s.  He has performed as soloist with orchestras, choirs and in concert series throughout the United States, including at Carnegie Hall with the Voices of Baha; at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Il Piccolo Opera of Brooklyn; at Benaroya Hall with Orchestra Seattle; and at Copley Symphony Hall with the San Diego Symphony.  In Israel, Terry has appeared with the Israel Philharmonic, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, the Rehovot Chamber Orchestra, the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra, the Herzliya Chamber Orchestra, the Technion Orchestra, the Hebrew University Orchestra, and various other instrumental and choral ensembles.  He has also performed recitals in over 30 cities and towns in the United States; 20 cities and towns in Israel, 6 cities in India; in Bad Tolz, Germany, in London, England and Reykjavik, Iceland.

James Dargan, violinist, has had extensive training and experience in early music, improvisation, and all eras of chamber music; he has worked closely with Judy Tarling, Nicholas Kitchen, and members of the Juilliard String Quartet; he has performed in venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Boston's Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall, and Carnegie Hall; and premiered pieces by T.J. Anderson, Rodney Lister, and Penka Kouneva. In the fall of 2013, James will become a full time member of the professional choir of The Church of the Advent. James is a founding member of Xerces Blue Ensemble and triumVirate.

Javier Caballero, cellist, born in Puerto Rico, is a versatile freelancer, teacher and arts administrator based in Boston. He is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory, where he studied with Rhonda Rider and the University of South Florida, where he studied with Scott Kluksdahl. Performances have taken Mr. Caballero from Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and Jordan Hall to clubs such as Ryles Jazz Club and Makor (NYC). He has performed with Lexington Symphony, Symphony by the Sea, and New Bedford Symphony and is equally at home performing musical theater shows at Boston Lyric Stage, early music with Florida Pro Musica, cello duos with his ensemble Due Celli, or premiering a new contemporary opera with Guerilla Opera. He has also recorded several albums with Middle Eastern, New Age, Balkan and Indie Rock groups and has performed with Diana Ross and the Supremes. Mr. Caballero has toured China and has been invited to perform several times in Palestine and Israel as part of the Baroque Festival organized by the Al Kamandjati Music Center. This summer he will return as faculty at the Point Counterpoint summer music festival and travel to Utah for a white water rafting expedition performing with a string quartet. In addition to performing in the Boston area and beyond, Mr. Caballero teaches privately and serves as Co-Artistic Director of Project STEPa string education program for children from underrepresented communities in Boston.

Matthew Auerbach, pianist, began his studies with Era Lifschitz, mother and first piano teacher of the famous concert pianist, Konstantin Lifschitz. Under her tutelage, Matthew won 1st Prize at the Thera Rabinowitch Piano Competition and 3rd Prize at the International Russian Music Piano Competition. At the University of California, Matthew had the good fortune to study piano with Dr. Maria Ezerova, an accomplished pupil of the great pianist Mikhail Pletnev, and harpsichord with Dr. Linda Burman-Hall, a musicologist and student of the legendary harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt. Matthew's piano and harpsichord performances of music by Prokofiev, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Scarlatti, and J.S. Bach led his music professors to describe his playing as "musically very mature, full of interesting interpretations, technically brilliant, among the most advanced in the department." Since the beginning of his performing career, Matthew has performed a substantial number of pieces for solo piano and has enjoyed playing a great variety of chamber music (duets, trios, and quintets with fellow violinists, cellists, and even the occasional piano concerto). Now an active member of the New York Piano Society, Matthew won the privilege to perform at Carnegie Hall in March 2011. Currently residing in Malden, Matthew serves as the summer organist for services at the Church of St. John the Evangelist on Bowdoin Street, near the State House.
