Event

Thumbelina at The Baldwin School
Thumbelina
by Aileen McCulloch and Nora Whittaker
based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen
March 8 at 7 p.m. and March 9 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

When a kind woman helps a vagabond fairy, she is rewarded with the child she's always wanted - well, almost. The child, no bigger than her mother's thumb wishes she could have an adventure off of her table top and is almost sorry for the wish when she is found and stolen by a romantic toad who wants to marry her. Her departure from her mother's table propels her on an adventure where she learns that friendship is important and that good deeds pave the way to success, and that the best things happen in life when a girl is encouraged to be herself. Along the way she meets the leader of the Flying Family Flea Circus, P.T. Bumbleroach, a friendly Swallow, a Mole who wants her to leave the circus for him and many more creatures around her own size.

Thumbelina features our middle school students  in a production with only three performances. Seating is general admission, and the play lasts a little over an hour.

Tickets $10 for students and $12 for adults.

The show is directed by drama instructor Aileen McCulloch, with music direction by Upper School students, Camille Murray ('22), Emily Seltzer ('21) and Carys Li ('19). Destiny Brown ('19) is stage manager, with assistance from Lucy Bonin ('21) and middle schooler Emma Barnes ('24). Nahla Yankowy ('22) and Elizabeth Delaney ('22) design costumes, while Olivia Stephan ('19) designs the set. Asia Blocker ('21) and Milan Thornton ('22) handle the choreography.

Additional production design and construction and front and back of house assistance comes from the Middle School Players and Upper School Maskers.

Thumbelina will be presented on March 8 at 7 p.m., and March 9 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Simpson Center for the Performing Arts on the Baldwin School Campus. Tickets are available by visiting the Maskers website at www.maskers.club.
