LA River Expeditions
Please keep an eye here and on our Facebook page for additional news or updates, such as tickets posted for sale. https://www.facebook.com/LARiverExpeditions. Otherwise, for the time being, we are SOLD OUT.
This is a sporty, challenging, soft-bottomed section of the river with light Class-I rapids that is now officially opened up for recreational use (the first time since the river was channelized 80 years ago!). These guided recreational-educational trips are based on the successful trips we've run with various partners in the Sepulveda Basin, up in the San Fernando Valley, in 2011 and 2012. Come experience this vibrant part of L.A. and this famous natural resource in a way that you've never seen them before!
You'll paddle a lush 2.5-mi. stretch in your kayak in approx. 2 1/2 hrs., with all basic equipment provided, as you learn through our educators and staff about the watershed, the wildlife, and the history and politics of our hometown river. You'll pick up paddling skills and learn how to be safer around rivers and, of course, you'll have fun and get in some great exercise. You'll ride a bike back along the nifty, smooth bike trail, giving you yet a second insightful perspective on the river.
WARNING: This trip is arduous and is not recommended for everyone it's not simply flatwater paddling, as in the Sepulveda Basin. There are shallow rocks and light rapids to navigate, and boats to lift -- all in 90-degree (typically) heat. Do not register for these trips if you're a first-time kayaker, if you have a medical condition that would be sensitive to doing strenuous activity in the sun, or if you are over 210 lbs. -- due to kayak stability/capacity limits.
For its river conservation efforts since 2008, LA River Expeditions is the recipient of the Green Paddle award (American Canoe Association), the River Warrior award (Resource Renewal Institute) and the River Hero award (River Network). As avid river enthusiasts and boaters, our experienced staff has decades of collective experience running rivers and guiding trips, and various levels of boating training & First Aid/CPR, so you're in good hands.
If you're up for and able to handle this novel urban adventure, then we'd love to have you aboard!
