Come party with VPR and be part of the process of developing a new opera production! Join composer Yoav Gal and a cast of singers and instrumentalists at VPR's intimate storefront theater, Behind the Door, for a sneak peek at Gal's quirky first opera, THE DWARF.

Thursday, June 20th at 8:00 pm
Saturday, June 22nd at 4:00 pm

In Front Of and Behind the Door
219 Court Street, Brooklyn NY 11201

It was The New York Times article featuring the 2003 world premiere of THE DWARF at Vertical Player Repertory, "Never Say Die in Indie Opera" by Anne Midgette, which coined the term "indie opera."

THE DWARF tells of the Lady Katherina Kaiser and the attention she arouses by wearing an unfashionably capacious dress. Whator whomis she concealing under there?

"the music illustrates the humorous fairy tale quality of the story by giving its harmonies a sardonic twist" Anne Midgette, The New York Times

For the Sneak Preview, excerpts from THE DWARF will be staged amidst the party-goers in the audience, accompanied by a trio of piano, double bass and drums. Dance music will be played before and afterwards, and refreshments will be available to whet the appetite for the full production of THE DWARF, coming to VPR November 2013, in an urban location TBA.

Peter Szep, conductor
Judith Barnes, stage director
Yoav Gal, costume design

The new production of The Dwarf in November will be directed by the madly creative Doug Fitch, who recently turned Avery Fischer Hall on its head for two collaborations with the New York Philharmonic: Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre and Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen, and is now working on his third major collaboration with the NY Phil: A Dancer's Dream.
