Songwriting is a universal impulse, and the juxtaposition of two distant song cultures often helps bring out the essence of each culture. The first half of this program features classic Spanish songs from Spain and Argentina, moving on to songs from the American Songbook in the second half. After three American Songbook seasons at Lincoln Center, one can hardly understate the influence of this genre beyond its jazz roots. To most, the genre refers to songs written in the first half of the 20th century by composers such as George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers or Cole Porter, but composers and songwriters today continue to expand our rich cultural heritage. A good example is Kenneth Frazelle's "Songs in the Rearview Mirror" for mezzo soprano and piano, influenced by the photographs of Alabama native William Christenberry, whose footsteps Frazelle retraced, unearthing turbulent memories from his own Southern past.
