Pianist/composer Alan Blackman debuts his original compositions along with innovative jazz arrangements of well know popular tunes. He is joined by award winning bassist Tom Baldwin and NYC based drummer Ferenc Nemeth.
Pianist and composer, Alan Blackman, has been a mainstay in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area for nearly a decade. He has performed at Blues Alley, the Kennedy Centers Millennium Stage, and nearly all of the areas Jazz Festivals both as a freelancer and with his group the Blackman/Barke Quartet. This group was runner-up in the DCJazz.com international competition and the Takoma Park Jazz Brawl. Alan has taught the jazz combos at Towson University as well accompanied the Jazz Vocal Master Class. In addition he has given private lessons through Maryland Conservatory, Maryland Piano, and Howard Community College. Alan received a Bachelors Degree in Studio Music and Jazz performance from the University of Miami and a Masters in jazz piano performance from Towson University. Alan has worked for The Platters, soul artist Darlene Love, and toured South America as Latin pop singer Milton Cortezs keyboardist in 1993. His folk and Broadway skills were honed as pianist for both Karen Goldberg and national recording artist Jane Olivor. Recently, he was awarded the eastern regional songwriting award by the Gospel Music Association and was selected to be part of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center in D.C. Alan released his first CD of original music, Shadowdance, in January 2000 and is currently working on his first jazz composition book tentatively entitled, Changing Standards, which will be accompanied by an audio CD of his original arrangements. He received a Maryland State Arts Grant for 2007 in Musical Composition and will debut his new trio in early May.
Tom Baldwin, jazz bassist, composer, and educator, was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. After earning a BM in Jazz Studies at Ithaca College, he returned to the Baltimore - Washington metropolitan area and is now among the most in-demand bassists of the region. In 1995, Baldwin was the second place finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Bass Competition. Since that time, he has had the opportunity to work with a slew of prominent jazz artists. A partial list would include instrumentalists Eric Alexander, Gene Bertoncini, Stanley Cowell, George Garzone, Tutti Heath, Fred Hersch, Brian Lynch, Harold Mabern, James Moody, and James Williams, as well as vocalists Michael Feinstein, Eartha Kitt, James Naughton, and Kenny Rankin. He has performed at such venues as Blues Alley, The Kennedy Center, Baird Auditorium, The Corcoran, Wolftrap, and Twins Lounge. Baldwin's debut CD, Glom On To This, is scheduled for release this Fall. Featuring all original compositions, it is a showcase for his writing and arranging skills, as well as his playing. While this is his first recording as a leader, he also appears as a sideman on over a dozen other CD's. An active teacher and clinician, Baldwin is the jazz bass instructor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and has participated in IAJE summer workshops in Montgomery County for the past three years.
Ferenc Nemeth was born in Keszthely, Hungary. He started to play the drums when he was three years old. His father gave him his first drum lessons. At age fourteen he moved out of the family house and went to the Richter Jnos Conservatory in Gyr, to study classical percussion. When he was eighteen he moved to Budapest where he started to play different styles of music. He attended the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Soon Ferenc became one of the busiest jazz drummers in Hungary. After the Academy, he got a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and moved to Boston where he lived for three years. He also attended to New England Conservatory and did one year as a graduate student . In 2001 he applied and got accepted to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz program where he studied until 2003. He currently lives in New York. He has performed and/or recorded with a variety of artists such as: Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, John Patitucci, Terence Blanchard, John Abercrombie, Dave Samuels, Mark Turner, Hal Crook, David Benoit, Bud Shunk, Darren Barret, Bruno Raberg, Greg Hopkins, Phil Wilson, Billy Childs, Reggie Hamilton, John Clayton, Jimmy Heath, Dave Grusin, Bob Sheppard, Steve Turre, Eddie Deniels, Eddie Henderson, Ron McClure, Chris Cheek, Aaron Goldberg, Kenny Wheeler, Eli Degibri, The Mason Brothers, The Henry Mancini Orchestra,etc.
