Dr. Vandana Shiva Speaks on "Soil Not Oil" - Securing Our Food in Times of Climate Change.
On Wednesday, August 27 at 7:00PM, Sonoma Country Day School, in partnership with the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center and the International Forum on Globalization (IFG), presents physicist, environmental activist, and author Dr. Vandana Shiva. In 1993, Shiva received the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize) and was named among the top five "Most Important People in Asia" by AsiaWeek in 2001.
Dr. Shiva will discuss the world food crisis and other critical issues of our day, including climate change and farmer suicides in India. Her latest book, Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in an Age of Climate Crisis, addresses these issues as well. She has written almost two dozen publications including Breakfast of Biodiversity: the Political Ecology of Rain Forest Destruction, 2005; Earth Democracy; Justice, Sustainability, and Peace, 2005; Manifestos on the Future of Food and Seed, 2007.
The event will be a benefit for Navdanya International, institute founded by Dr. Shiva which engages in research and policy work as well as community-based activities. Within international policymaking fora, media, and civil society, Navdanya International aims to articulate rarely heard views from the global South on emerging issues critical to justice, sustainability, and peace.
The discussion will be followed by a wine reception and book signing.
