The ground bass, a repeated harmonic pattern, forms the basis of some of the most memorable music from the 17th century. As the Renaissance gave way to the Baroque, music from English consorts and Italian dances to Spanish divisions and broadside ballads all relied on grounds as a common currency in a time of dramatic musical change. In a program that showcases the best of this beloved genre, Seven Time Salt explores the many guises of the ground bass from Greensleeves to La Follia and beyond. This program features vibrant instrumental and vocal music of 16th and 17th century England, Italy, and Spain. We include choice selections from The Division Violin, The English Dancing Master, and original compositions by King's Noyse violinist David Douglass.
Karen Burciaga (violin & viola), Daniel Meyers (recorder, flute & percussion), Josh Schreiber Shalem (viola da gamba), Matthew Wright (lute & guitar), Emily Rideout (violin & viola), Barbara Allen Hill (soprano).
