Jack Champion is a local San Francisco disc jockey on Radio Valencia, a volunteer-run not for profit radio station based in San Francisco's Mission District. He has been bringing the all vinyl Bakersfield Backbeat show to a large local and international audience since 2010. Beginning in the fall of 2011 he began combining his radio show with a live audience-driven stage show called The Hillbilly Hootenanny.
The two-hour live broadcast Hootenanny is based on Grand Old Opry Stage Show and brings together the best traditional country & western musicians from Northern California to make up the backing band. Each show is emceed by by radio host Jack Champion, and features the Bay Area's best Americana and Country Western singers who each perform 2-3 songs.
Each show has so far been standing room only, and the podcasts have been downloaded in increasing numbers with each show (over 1,000 downloads for a Hootenanny Broadcast during Fall 2011).
House Band: Hank Maninger Guitar, Eddie Kendrick Bass, Tony Sales Drums, Joe Goldmark Pedal Steel, Maurice Tani Acoustic Guitar. Performers: Toshio Hirano, Jessica Rose, Misisipi Mike, Rik Elswit, Joe Rut, Pam Brandon.
