The Yanks, with Liz Hanley
What a celebration of the new faces of trad music in America this night will be! Really not to be missed. This quartet had been playing informally together for many years and decided to get together to record and tour just last year. Dan Gurney on accordion, Isaac Alderson on flute, whistles, and Pipes, Dylan Foley on fiddle, and Sean Earnest on guitar. Their new CD simply called (appropriately and somewhat facetiously as this is what they would be referred to in Ireland) The Yanks, is pure joy. A new generation of musicians, removed from the homeland but with an umbilical musical connection that feeds their passion.
Speaking of next generations, Liz Hanley from Milton now making her home in New York grew up in a very musical family. Her dad is Andy Hanley and wonderful and well known fiddler in this area. But Liz was mostly drawn to Classical music until she went to NYU and began studying with, and shortly afterwards playing with, the legendary Mick Moloney. All changed for Liz and now she is being regarded as one of the most intriguing traditional singers and fiddlers on the scene. A perfect compliment to the evening, Liz (another Yank!) will open and knowing that these youngsters all know each other well, will likely join in for a few pieces!
The Burren Backroom series launched in October of 2011 but has already created many memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy and Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. Regularly, there are "openers" artists presenting three or four pieces often in contrast to the "main" offering. This has seen some spectacular new and often unexpected talent being presented on stage.
Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
