Following on the heels of their Spring 2013 issue, How Cooperatives Are Driving the New Economy, YES! Magazine is hosting a celebration of the local cooperatives movement in Seattle. The party's theme, "We Heart Co-ops!" refers to more than the grocery co-ops that come immediately to mindthink worker-owned cooperatives like Equal Exchange Espresso in Ballard, community land trusts like Seattle-based Homestead CLT, credit unions, and cooperative purchasing groups like the Seattle Farm Co-op.|
Co-op experts from across Puget Sound will be on hand to answer questions about starting cooperative groups, connecting with start-up funds and other local resources, and joining existing cooperative endeavors.
The popular building salvage store Second Use, recently relocated from South Park to 6th Avenue in SODO, offers a unique site for the networking event. In Seattle Greendrinks tradition, the event features free food and beverages from partnering organizations: Central Co-op, Fremont Brewing, Wilridge Winery, Snoqualmie Ice Cream, and Raaka Chocolate. Vintage decor from Second Use's eclectic inventory, puppets and banners courtesy of the Fremont Arts Council (producers of the Fremont Solstice Parade), live DJ, on-site photo booth, and door prizes round out the evening's festivities.
Additional co-sponsoring organizations include the Bainbridge Graduate Institute, Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery, Domestic Fair Trade Association, Seattle Good Business Network, Black Dollar Days, Olympia-based Northwest Cooperative Development Center, One PacificCoast Bank, Clean Greens Farm and Market, Homestead Community Land Trust, Washington Fair Trade Coalition, Black Coffee Co-op, Seattle Farm Co-op, Northwest Staging & Sound Design, Universal Declaration Communication Strategies, Whidbey Island-based Moving Images (producers of Shift Change, a new documentary on worker-owned cooperatives), Vashon Island-based Backbone Campaign, and S.L.I.C.E., which organizes an annual one-day conference and training in how to set up a local cooperative.
