McAuley, Horan, and O'Caoimh
The series continues with the return of a spectacular trio that started the whole new period of concerts in the Backroom back in October of 2011. And again, what an evening of traditional airs, songs, and spectacular dance tunes this promises to be.
Mick McAuley and Win Horan are no strangers to Boston audiences. Win has been with the amazing group Solas since its inception in the mid 1990s, and Mick joined up after original accordion player John Williams left after two albums. McAuley brought the added dimension of his guitar work, singing and songwriting, and has since become one of the truly dynamic forces of the band. After studying at the New England Conservatory, Win has been at the forefront of the band from the beginning alternating between wistful air - many self penned - and wildly exuberant jigs and reels as well as sensitive song accompaniments. And Colm, the young turk, on guitar and occasionally as a singer, was recruited from Mick's home area of Kilkenny.
This trio is really breaking new ground while continuing to illustrate all that has been great in their musical history.
The Burren Backroom series launched in October of 2011 but has already created many memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy and Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. Regularly, there are "openers" artists presenting three or four pieces often in contrast to the "main" offering. This has seen some spectacular new and often unexpected talent being presented on stage.
Tickets are $23 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
