Written by Terrence McNally, "Master Class" was originally produced on Broadway in 1995 and won Tony Awards for Best Play. The Jewel Box production is directed by Andrea Gonzales and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. from May 24June 15. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. on June 2, 9 & 16.
Tony Award-winning author Terrence McNally turns the audience into the students of the infamous fiery and larger than life opera diva Maria Callas. The play was based on a series of master classes the great diva conducted at Juilliard at the end of her career. Glamorous and commanding, she coaxes, prods, berates, and inspires the accomplished on-stage students with her cutting wit. The stagehand is persecuted regularly as he tries to cater to Ms. Callas' every demand. Maria softens as she reminisces on the prime of her career, often addressing the audience directlytelling them to be somebody, "because what we do matters."
