| Description |
Award-winning playwright Gary Aylesworth and his Construction Crew Theater present the world premiere of THE BALLAD OF EDGAR CAYCE (A Bluegrass Operetta). A project in gestation for several years, this new work follows on the heels of Aylesworths critically acclaimed 2006 production, SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN.
THE BALLAD OF EDGAR CAYCE is a unique dramatic interpretation of a unique American life. True to the facts, the play channels the vagaries of a gifted and prophetic man. Drawing from the over 14,000 readings Cayce did while in a trance state, this play paints a rich portrait of one who lived his life on both the material and spiritual planes. Cayces gifts were such that others came to him for information and answers. This included the War Department, Thomas Edison, Gloria Swanson, Nikola Tesla, and Woodrow Wilson.
Inevitably, those who were determined to gain financially also worked their way into the readings. Cayce was asked to search for lost treasure, find hidden oil reserves, call winners at the horse races, and predict stock market prices. The tension which arose for Cayce between material gain and spiritual, healing work then largely determined the course of his life.
GARY AYLESWORTH will play Edgar Cayce, and his longtime collaborator PETER NEWTON will portray sundry other characters including hypnotist extraordinaire Hart the Laugh King. Together, inside a dense and completely original musical atmosphere, they will attempt to negotiate the mysterious boundary between this world and the Other World.
Aylesworth has earned accolades near and far over the years. In addition to numerous Hollywood Drama-Logue awards for writing and performance, San Francisco Magazine voted him the 1989 Best Local Theater Talent. SF Weekly labeled Aylesworth as "one of our most original local playwrights (for his) consistent vision of total theater- a demanding juggle of musical, mimetic, and dramatic elements all wrapped in high-speed neurotic comedy."
In 2006, critics commended SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN for its deft handling of historical figures. Chloe Veltman (SF Weekly) said of the play," If you come out of this play with your soul and head spinning out of control, dont be surprised." Robert Avila of the SF Bay Guardian noted "SEE THAT MY GRAVE IS KEPT CLEAN gives eloquent voice to the restless rebel wide awake beneath the glossy, manufactured surface of the American Dream."
Aylesworth, a San Francisco resident for over 25 years, describes his own work as Serious Comedy, Documentary Fantasy, and Opera Compressed. THE BALLAD OF EDGAR CAYCE extends Aylesworths theatrical voice in new directions. The musical experiments in this production range from Brahms to the Monroe Brothers to original compositions by Aylesworth himself. Moreover, the play itself is a distinctive exploration of music and its relation to the Other Worlds.
Make your appointment with Edgar Cayce at A Traveling Jewish Theatre to witness Gary Aylesworths THE BALLAD OF EDGAR CAYCE, a profound, contemporary take on a modern mystic.
