Gary Lucas and The Golem
Gary Lucas & The Golem

Known for his work with Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley, Gods and Monsters, and for his innovative film scores, Gary Lucas has been dubbed "The Thinking Man's Guitar Hero" by The New Yorker, "The world's most popular avant-rock guitarist" by The Independent (UK), "One of the 100 Greatest Living Guitarists" (Classic Rock), a "Legendary Leftfield guitarist" by The Guardian (UK), and the "Guitarist of 1000 Ideas" by The New York Times. The British world music magazine fRoots recently described Gary Lucas as "without question, the most innovative and challenging guitarist playing today." Rolling Stone's David Fricke wrote: "Gary Lucas is one of the best and most original guitarists in Americaa modern guitar miracle."

Saratoga Arts will partner with the Saratoga Film Forum to present Gary Lucas performing his original live score for the 1920 German silent horror-fantasy expressionist film The Golem, the tale of a 16th century rabbi who made a man out of clay to save the Jewish community of Prague from termination.

Lucas' score for The Golem, a "hauntingly brilliant and meticulously timed" (in the words of The Village Voice) combines composition with improvisation and lasts 70 minutes; he will  augment that performance with shorter selections from Cinefantastique, his arrangement for solo guitar of music for films.  A brief discussion with the musician will follow the performance.

The performance and screening will take place at The Arts Center at 320 Broadway, beginning at 7:00pm on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Presented by Saratoga Arts with the Saratoga Film Forum and the support of a SaratogaArtsFest Partner Program Enhancement Grant .
