Spirit of Hope 2013
This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Spirit of Hope Awards. This event honors individuals who have worked in the trenches, often against popular opinion, and who have used their time, money and/or talents to advance the fight against HIV/AIDS. It is also an evening of love, light, and laughter, and many have said it is their favorite event of the year. This year we are delighted to have the Los Angeles cast of Rent perform at the event.
We are proud to honor the fabulous Sheryl Lee Ralph. Sheryl is a Tony nominated star in the original Dreamgirls on Broadway, and an accomplished and award winning film and television actor currently appearing in the hit TV show Smash, as well as The Showtime series Ray Donovan. Her book, Redefining Diva, is available on Amazon.com. Sheryl is also a tireless activist who, who for 23 years has produced Divas Simply Singing, now the longest consecutive running musical AIDS benefit in the country. The Diva Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS for men, women and children around the globe.
Dr. Tony Mills is a long time friend and supporter of Being Alive and the HIV community. Living with HIV himself, his practice offers the most current treatment possible to his patients, along with compassion and a style of care not often seen. In addition, Tony lectures all over the world on issues regarding HIV, and is a former Colt Model.
Craig Taylor has been a long serving volunteer at Being Alive, starting as front desk manager, co-editor of the newsletter, and later as a board member, where he has served tirelessly since 2006. Most recently Craig has spearheaded our very successful Antioch Alive Mental Health program; a collaboration between Antioch University's Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology with an LGBT specialization, and Being Alive.
The 2013 Spirit of Hope Awards event will once again be held at Skybar at The Mondrian Hotel on Tuesday May 14th 2013, beginning at 6:30PM. The evening includes a cocktail reception, delicious hors d'oeuvres, an auction and live entertainment, topped off by this year's awards ceremony.
Being Alive is a membership organization of 1,200+ people living with HIV/AIDS. Established in 1986, Being Alive was created by three friends living with AIDS in response to a need for services free of red tape. As an HIV peer-run and peer-based membership organization, Being Alive serves as a beacon of emotional support, treatment information, and empowerment to thousands of people living with the virus.
