Robot Immigrants
"My Heart Is a Traveler" is a performance-installation created by Robot Immigrants. This piece explores personal stories of immigration across multiple generations and cultures set against a backdrop of perpetual technological change. By layering translations between an intangible past and an ephemeral future, we are creating multiple bridges and links across borders. What are we working towards? Can we open up a space to include new worlds, new beings, and a new era of co-existence?
The journey begins as environmental performance and ends as an interactive art installation. The technologies we encounter include: video mapping (onto both moving bodies and mapping moving bodies onto video in real time), the integration of field recorded audio and live vocal mimicry, light/shadow/object puppetry, and human-robot interaction with flying quadrotors. Layering these technologies with the natural elements of water, dirt, wood, and flour, we transition ancestral themes to modern-day metaphors. Moving alongside personal documentaries of our parents' immigration experience, we invite the audience to join in the adventure and share their stories. Journeying past the shadow-land of technological and biological mergence, join the Robot Immigrants in a land both familiar and foreign, a place where we are all native tourists building a society and searching for a home.
