| Description |
Each year I produce a New Land Jazz Summer Student Spotlight Concert featuring two or three of the top high school level players in the Portland area. These student leaders have a chance to make a big deal about their music, invite the whole community to celebrate their talent and receive the New Land Jazz Leadership Award. This year's leaders are bassist and vocalist Kate Davis, tenor sax powerhouse Ian Christensen, alto sax adept Patrick Sargent, Alden Harris-McCoy guitarist, and vocalist Jeff Cameron. These students are all amazing and I hope you will take an early afternoon to help them see that they are supported. With a little appreciation and recognition they will go on to make a splash in the global jazz community.
SUPERSTARS OF JAZZ EDUCATION In conjunction with the Student Spotlight in 2006 I started another award. This year I will give the '2008 Superstar of Jazz Education' Award to Jeff Cumpston and Mary Sue Tobin. With these awards, I attempt to honor the students for their achievements and recognize the many ways our jazz educators foster the lives of our young musicians, and give them the example to become leaders as well.
For more information about the students and educators see the New Land Jazz website, www.newlandjazz.com.
I hope you'll join me on Sunday June 29th, in the afternoon, from 2-4:30 at The Old Church, at S.W. 11th and Clay. If you'd like to help me get the word out, I'll have a poster to send out soon, and two or three email announcements. Just drop me a note. I am looking for sponsors, who can be recognized in the program, at the $50 level, if you would like to help that way. (This opportunity will close on June 1st.) Thank you.
Yours In Music,
Jim Corcoran President of New Land Jazz
