About Becky Gaunt & "Gone with the Wind: Original Songs from a Bygone Era"
Becky Gaunt grew up in Florida, the fourth of five girls. At a young age, Becky watched her parents welcome three elderly family members, the "Grannies," into the rooms vacated by her sisters' departures for college. While her friends were at home, playing video games or dress up, Becky's at-home entertainment consisted of listening to stories from her Grannies' lives, and singing and playing their favorite music. Unaware of it at the time, those songs & stories provided her with a deep well of inspiration that has nourished and informed her musical journey.
"Gone With the Wind" is Becky Gaunt's personal music project. Something that has officially been in the works for about a year, but draws its source from the day her Grannies moved in. Over the last year, Becky interviewed elderly friends & family and collected their histories, histories that became the basis for the performance aspect of her project: This project is a combination of her research and passion for musical performance.
Becky Gaunt is a graduate student at McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul. She is the Director of the Edina Singing Seniors. She regularly tours the US as the fiddle player with the Grammy-winning Okee Dokee Brothers. In 2012, Becky was recognized as the Grand Prize winner (with ensemble, Rhythm & Bows) of the National Eclectic Strings Competition in Atlanta, GA. Favoring the blues, swing, and rockabilly styles, she channels a Grappelli-esque sweetness with the rawness of Billie Holiday. Becky's music is toe-tapping and heart-string-pulling.
Becky's band, The Gauntlettes, is a group of fantastic local musicians. Some are fellow McNally Smith students, others Becky met through other musical projects with the Yes!Lets Collective. The program is sure to appeal to an intergenerational audience since it includes performers of all ages. Members of the Edina Singing Seniors will open, performing a few of their favorite songs.
