VanFest Eight
the eighth year of vanfest is finally arriving

are you ready?

of course you're ready, it's why you're here

join us for the coolest micro-festival in the northwest, with 26 bands on 3 stages, right up against the beautiful cedar river.

it's on Saturday, August 25th from 12-9PM

it's all ages

it's a benefit for Maple Valley Food Bank

it costs 15 advance, 20 at the gate to get in, but financial accessibility is important so if that's going to be a major issue, get in contact with me we will work something out

it's really fun and definitely a different experience than any other festival you've been to

here's what bands are playing, in alphabetical order (things are just more fair that way):

listen to the ones you don't recognize, get familiar

Anime Creek
https://animecreek.bandcamp.com/

Prolific seattle twee-punk duo. without seeing Grif's guitar playing at the Maple Valley Battle of the Bands in like 2012 or something I probably never would have started my noise band. still, this isn't a noise band and they're quite lovely

Bitch Fits
https://soundcloud.com/user-835514940

Idaho-based lo-fi yee-haw power-pop. couldn't find words to describe them that didn't have hyphens.  hyphen-core? that's a genre now

The Black Tones
https://www.theblacktones.com/

look, you want to listen to some straight up ROCK music, with a strong message? that's what the black tones do best. they groove, they shred, and you don't want to miss them

Donte Johnson "Da Qween"
https://soundcloud.com/qweenofthots

Da Qween, aka Donte Johnson, is a person of many talents. Rapping, singing, songwriting, producing, poetry, activism, community organization, and much more.  Amazing performer.

Depressica
https://depressica.bandcamp.com/

sad music that will touch your emotions a lot just trust me on this.  the recordings are pretty quiet and lo-fi but the full band arrangements you'll hear bring even more depth and feeling to the tracks.  stoked on having her for sure

Drama Bahama
https://dramabahama.bandcamp.com/

weirdo avant-garde dirt folk pop music.  definitely one of the more unique artists I've heard this year and I mean that in the best way.  Plus, chris from Bad Luck is playing drums with them for the live sets, so that's going to be something wild

Familiars
https://familiars.bandcamp.com/

you might recognize the baritone vocals of Ian Rust, formerly of the band Kithkin. but Familiars is great enough that I don't have to pitch the band off the reputation of Kithkin. This is very new-wavey, very shimmery, very poppy, all in ways that just work really well. the songwriting is catchy, the mood is right, this is a damn good band

Floral Tattoo
https://floraltattoo.bandcamp.com

Used to be the solo folk punk project of Alex Anderson, now a fully fleshed out punk band, and the full lineup just makes this so much better.  songs about suffering, but written in a way you can still dance and smile to

From The Future
https://fromthefuture.bandcamp.com/

noodly post-hardcore fronted by Zesty Sams, Maple Valley legend.  really glad to bring them back home and also represent screamy loud music with great guitar leads

Gems
https://gemsjams.bandcamp.com/

instrumental space-rock jams with just two drummers and two keyboards.  this is going to blow your mind. this is my favorite live band in Seattle. if you miss their set for any reason I will publicly shame you

Gloom
https://gloomwa.bandcamp.com

they used to be called Kanye Twitty please help me pressure them to change the name back to Kanye Twitty

JERRY CORE
https://jerrycore9000.bandcamp.com/

seinfeld-based experimental electronic music
nothing is everything, 999 life is nothing, jerry jerry jerry jerry jerry

Michael Weber
https://michaeljweber.bandcamp.com/

Maple Valley based OFFICEWAVE artist. bringing you the hottest synths and 80s retro beats to groove to.  there's a lot of people doing this style right now but he's actually killing it and stands out pretty well amongst the synth-wave-wave.  gonna have a good light show going with this, great way to close the night out.

persimmon
https://jenniferward.bandcamp.com/

bedroom pop, dreamy stuff from talented singer/songwriter Jennifer Ward.  music to float to. music to stare at the ceiling or sky to.  music.

Question? No Answer
https://questionnoanswer.bandcamp.com/

half pop punk half arena rock, lots of stage presence, lots of talent and musicality slammed into a few chords and catchy hooks and long spoken word intros about weed

The Requisite
https://therequisitemusic.bandcamp.com/

last time they played this fest was in 2012, before it was cool.  now they return, non-acoustic, rocking as hard as possible.  if you like early-2000s catchy friggin rock music these guys will make you happy

Retirement
https://retirement.bandcamp.com/

the most underrated band in Seattle and I'll keep saying that til they get famous i swear to god.  part emo music part post-rock part piano pop.  just very emotive, very dynamic, worth checking out for sure.

Save Bandit
https://savebanditnw.bandcamp.com/

speaking of emo music these guys are the real deal. also, I heard they're going to do a Snowing cover. if they don't do the snowing cover I'm banning them from the fest for life. do the cover

SEACATS
https://seacats.bandcamp.com/

you already know about SEACATS. you already know there's going to be some shenanigans.  this is their 5th year in a row playing the festival and even on top of the shenanigans they play some amazing gotdang music.  but you already knew that

Shubzilla x Bill Beats
https://shubzilla.bandcamp.com/

one of the best rapper/producer duos in Seattle.  adjacent to the nerdcore scene but not trapped in it.  if you've been sleeping on these two, it's time to wake the hell up.  they're going to light this park on fire (metaphorically)

Sunday Night Heat
https://sundaynightheat.bandcamp.com/

Seattle's punkest supergroup, with members of Cut Man, Dude York, Dogbreth, and The Complex Dialect.  if you like to party and mosh to songs with important messages this is your chance

Tambo Live
https://tambolive.bandcamp.com/

Tambo is a young talented band from Maple Valley. they got this whole hard alternative rock thing going.  very soulful and bluesy at times.  don't miss these hometown shredders

Tool

members of Chastity Belt, HOOP, and FF.  really good soft indie rock. their album isn't out yet so you have to take my word for it but seriously this is pretty amazing.  this is not the Maynard James Keenan prog rock group but I plan on tricking a bunch of rock bros to show up for this set anyway

The Vedasay
https://thevedasay.bandcamp.com

they're from portland!  it's like if The Mars Volta decided to collab with Parliament Funkadelic.  it's like if every funk band you've ever heard decided to stop being boring.  one of the top must-see sets for sure

Whitney Ballen
https://whitneyballen.bandcamp.com/

Whitney has one of the most unique voices I've heard in a singer/songwriter.  Whitney brings atmosphere and feelings forward in music in ways a lot of people can't.  even just seeing her solo is a life changing experience, but the full band thing she's got going on is mind blowing.  having her back with the whole lineup is something I am beyond excited for

William Bird
https://williambird.bandcamp.com

emotive singer-songwriter from Everett playing with a backing band. I've worked with this guy a lot. he's legit, his music has a unique vulnerability to it.  really brings out the feels in you.

ok wow you read all the way to the bottom, that's commitment. I guess that means you're coming, right?  I'll see you there
