Draw on sweet night

Late 16th century England saw the development of the madrigal, a secular vocal music style with the utmost emphasis on expressing the text. The English madrigal flourished intensely for a short period from 1588 to 1627 as composers pushed the boundaries of expression through clever imitation, texture and daring harmony. John Wilbye's Draw on sweet night is the epitome of the madrigalian style as it perfectly captures the melancholic nature of the text. This compositional approach made its way into sacred music, particularly in anthems by Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656), whose spicy and dissonant sound sound is akin to ordering 5/5 stars at a Thai restaurant, taking Tomkins' music right out of the Renaissance period.

This program will feature madrigals, amusing catches (a type of round) and anthems by Thomas Tomkins, Thomas Weelkes (1576-1623), John Wilbye (1574-1638) and other Renaissance English composers.
