The Portland Ballet To Hold Spring Ballet In New Studio Theatre

Portland, OR  The Portland Ballet, the citys preeminent ballet academy and youth company, formerly known as Pacific Artists Ballet, has announced details of its annual Spring Ballet, which will be held this year in the organizations recently completed Studio Theatre.
The event, which will be held Friday and Saturday, June 6 and 7 at 7:30 pm, will feature Reverie du Soir a Tribute to Loie Fuller, music by Debussy, choreographed by Carol Shults. The Portland Ballet will also present this piece at the Maryhill Museum on June 21 for their "Dancing with Loie"  performances. Other work in the Spring Ballet will include Flower Festival Pas de Deux from the repertoire of August Bournonville, world famous choreographer of the Royal Danish Ballet, with music by Eduard Helsted. A new work by local choreographer Alexandrous Ballard entitled Concerto in D Minor, set to Bach, will also be included in the Spring Ballet as well as a piece by Rachael Tess entitled Dear...., inspired by creative writing exercises. Tess work will incorporate classic modern dance techniques as well as structured improvisation, with a collage of music from various artists including the Bell Orchestre and Beirut.
We are very excited to present such a wonderful program in our new Studio Theatre this season, said Nancy Davis, artistic director for The Portland Ballet. It is also a tremendous honor to be working with three extraordinary local choreographers, Carol Shults, Alexandrous Ballard and Rachael Tess. This experience adds tremendously to the education of our students at The Portland Ballet as well as enhancing the quality of the local arts community offerings.
Carol Shults is a repetiteur for the Dennis Spaight Trust, and former ballet mistress for The Portland Ballet, Ballet Oregon, and former instructor and historian for Oregon Ballet Theatre. She received her ballet training from Mia Slavenska and Vincenzo Celli, and danced with the Fort Worth Ballet under Slavenska's direction before moving to Portland.
Alexandrous Ballard, who most recently founded the Bouand Dance Company, studied at the Joffrey Ballet and the School of American Ballet, and danced professionally with Joyce Trisler Danscompany, New York Theatre Ballet, Redbank Ballet, the Cleveland/San Jose Ballet, Ballet Royale de Wallonie, Richmond Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theatre. Mr. Ballard currently teaches technique classes for advanced levels, and is a founding teacher of the mens program at The Portland Ballet.
Rachael Tess is a co-founder of Rumpus Room Dance, a dance collective based in Portland, Oregon and Goteborg, Sweden. Tess, who will join the Cullberg Ballet for the 2008-09 season, began her dance training at the School of Oregon Ballet Theatre, before attending the Juilliard School, where she earned a BFA. Upon graduation she joined Les Grands Ballet Canadiens and in 2005 moved to Sweden where she danced for two seasons with the GoteborgsOperansballett. She is a 2003 Princess Grace Award winner for modern dance, and was presented the Martha Hill Dance Award by the Juilliard faculty in 2004.
Davis noted that The Portland Ballet recently added the Studio Theatre at its facility to provide a more intimate setting for audiences as well as creating a space where aspiring dancers from the community can learn more about the organizations programs and the opportunities available to dancers through The Portland Ballet.
